Oregon

In 1889, Samuel and his family left Kansas and moved to Oregon. They might have moved to Oregon to buy inexpensive land to farm or had family out west. The 1900 Federal Census showed Samuel and his family living in Grant’s Pass, Oregon.  They own a home and had a mortgage.  His occupation was listed as a gold miner.  According to the 1910 Federal Census, Samuel was 73 years old, a farmer and worked for himself. By 1920, Samuel and his wife Emma owned their home free and clear. He lived in Oregon for 33 years until his death.

Health and Death

Samuel was 54 years old at the time his 1891 pension application was filed. He claimed to suffer from physical disabilities. He suffered from asthma and had for at least 14 years. He claimed asthma as a reason for applying for a pension. His first attack of asthma was in 1862 at Harrison’s Landing and he was troubled with it during the war.  After the war his asthma continued to get worse.

By 1900 he lived in Grant's Pass, Oregon.  In a 1921 letter to the Pension Department, a Dr. Loughridge stated that Samuel “has been under my observation and care from time to time and that he is almost helpless in lower extremities.  His legs will not support him at times and he falls to the floor or ground.  It is something like creeping paralysis or senile weakness.  He requires the constant care of someone as he cannot be left alone and cannot walk any distance without support.” Additionally, his hearing was poor and his eyesight was nearly gone. At this time he weighed 130 pounds and had white hair. Samuel Hoyt died on February 8, 1922 of senile debility in Grant’s Pass Oregon.  He was 82 years old. He was survived by his wife Emma and his children.
