Samuel Hoyt

Civil War Graffiti...the common soldier's version of social media.

Samuel Hoyt was born September 20, 1839 in Chautauqua County, New York. There was no baptismal record of his birth. His parents told him his age and he memorized it and reported it to the army when he enlisted. He joined the Union Army when he was 21 years old. Hoyt was a member of the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry, a volunteer unit that fought in almost all of the major Civil War battles. His unit fought alongside the 20th Maine, 44th New York and the 16th Michigan in defense of Little Round Top.
